Three Tips to Start Your Year in a "Timely" Manner

Sometimes time savings occur not because of what you do, but when you do it. As you begin your new year, here are 3 tips to implement today that will save you lots of time as your year progresses.
  • Add a new "Receipt" folder (or folders) labeled 2009 to your files
Do this now so you don't have to spend time later separating 2008 receipts from 2009 receipts. If the receipts have been entered into a software program, keeping them labeled in a file by year will make it easier find documentation if you are audited (and isn’t that the only reason you are keeping them?).
  • Add 2009 mileage notebook to car Mileage records fail when they aren’t easy to use, so keep a small spiral bound notebook and a pen in your car cupholder where you see it (if you claim mileage on your income tax or are reimbursed by your company). Start a new notebook every year, and put the old one with your tax records for the previous year, so if you are audited, it will be easy to find.
  • Purge your "Pending" file When was the last time you looked at everything in this file? There's probably lots that is outdated, so get lean by letting it go.
