Holiday Gift Simplicity

Maybe it's because I work with so many people who feel overwhelmed by too much "stuff", but giving that person more stuff as a "gift" is, at best, inconsiderate, and, at worst, cruel. Here are some better choices:

  • Give an experience. A balloon ride, hotel stay or massage are all great examples. Last year I gave my sister a Sedgeway tour of Santa Barbara and my 82 year old mother a balloon ride (really, she told me it's something she always wanted to do).
  • Give your time. I have a client with cabinet doors that need some minor paint touch-ups and to be re-hung. She would love a family member to offer to do that for her. Give certificates redeemable for your time baby-sitting to a busy mother. A friend gives her husband coupons for outings like "A day hike with picnic lunch". Check out the 'Father's Day gift coupons' and 'Mother's Day gift coupons' templates on the Microsoft website for more ideas.
  • Give to a charity in their name. If you don't know their favorite charity, give them a charity check , which your recipient can send to any registered US charity. It's my holiday gift to my major clients and people who refer me to major clients.
